Silek Harimau, better known today as Harimau Pencak Silat, is the rare and infamous fighting style from the Minangkabau tribe of West Sumatra. This fighting system is based on the Sumatran tiger and as a result its approach to combat is both unortho- dox and extremely effective. The art, like its inspira tion the tiger, is fast becoming extinct due to the lack of students willing to study in the strenuous and demanding training program.
Dark Gift: The Origins of Silek Harimau is an indie documentary film that took over seven years to produce. It is a unique and unprecedented attempt to trace the historic lineage and respected Harimau Silat masters across the globe. Follow the origins of this tribal warfare martial art system from Indonesia’s dense forests to the urban jungles of London and the United States.
For many years the art of Silek Harimau was underground and very secretive. Now, for the first time, the practitioners of this art open the doors to their classes and reveal the secrets of the art referred to as the dark gift.

Merantau screened at the 2009 Cannes film festival and received high appraisal. Merantau stars a rising Indonesian star Iko Uwais playing the role of a Minangkabau village boy who sets off to the city of Jakarta following the tradition of ‘merantau’ or right of passage. He soon finds himself in a seedy underworld of crime and corruption after saving a young girl's life.
British director Gareth Evans is the brain child behind this project. This former freelance director was hired to shoot a documentary in Indonesia over a period of six months on Pencak Silat which gave him the idea for the movie. After penning the script, he convinced the Indonesian government to back this project.
The choreography is certainly impressive with heavy influence from Thailand's Ong Bak film series and early works of Jackie Chan.

There are probably less than 400 Sumatran Tigers left in the wild today. They are critically endangered and in desperate need of our help to ensure their survival.
Please consider assisting us in raising funds that we will fully transfer to the Sumatran Tiger Trust, a UK registered charity. Help us preserve the original and ultimate teacher of Harimau Minangkabau Pencak Silat.
